Why LED downlights fail in Deal roofs.
Modern building regulations require loft insulation typically to 270mm minimum in existing homes on retrofit. Modern LED downlights generate less heat than the halogen units they replaced - but they still generate some, and their integrated drivers hate heat. Cover a non-IC-rated downlight with 270mm of mineral wool and one of two things happens: the driver's thermal cutout activates and the light flickers or dies, or the fitting overheats over time and the plastic bezel deforms, or worse, the loft insulation itself heats to a point of concern.
The fix is fittings rated for both fire compartmentation (30, 60 or 90 minute) and insulation contact (IC-rated). Aurora Enfiniti, JCC V50, Collingwood H2 Lite and Ansell iCage are the recurring picks. All fire-rated, all IC-rated, all IP65 for bathroom zone use, all with replaceable GU10 or dedicated LED modules.
Dimmer flicker.
Deal properties on old dimmer switches flicker on new LED loops. The old dimmers were leading-edge (TRIAC) types designed for the resistive load of halogen. LEDs are not resistive; a leading-edge dimmer clips the AC waveform in a way modern LED drivers don't like. Symptoms: flicker at low brightness, refusal to dim below 30%, buzzing from the driver, uneven dimming across a loop.
The fix is a trailing-edge dimmer sized for the total DC load. Varilight V-Pro, Aurora AOne, Lutron. Match the dimmer's minimum and maximum load to the sum of driver ratings on the loop. If the loop total is below the dimmer's minimum load, add a resistive dummy load or use fewer larger fittings.
Mixed driver types on one loop.
Constant-voltage (12V or 24V) LED strip and constant-current downlights don't share a dimmer well. Under-cabinet kitchen strip should be on its own switched loop with its own dedicated driver, not paralleled with the ceiling downlight dimmer. Common Deal kitchen fault: strip flickers when the ceiling downlights are dimmed. Fix is separating the loops at the switch and running the strip on a non-dimmed or independently-dimmed feed.
Bathroom zones.
BS 7671 zone classifications for bath and shower rooms determine downlight rating.
- Zone 0 (inside the bath tub) - SELV 12V only, IP67.
- Zone 1 (above the bath to 2.25m) - IP44 minimum, RCD-protected.
- Zone 2 (600mm horizontal from zone 1) - IP44 minimum.
- Outside zones - IP20 acceptable, but the whole circuit still 30mA RCD-protected.

Certification.
New downlight circuit or altering the existing lighting circuit in a bathroom is notifiable work under Part P. We self-certify. Straight like-for-like replacement of existing fittings on an unchanged circuit is not notifiable but is still tested and recorded on a Minor Works Certificate.
