The domestic market has settled on 7.4kW single-phase for most Deal driveways - a 32A dedicated circuit off a Type A or Type B RCD (Type B where the car doesn't have onboard DC fault current management). Load management to shed the charger when the shower comes on is now standard. For Walmer detached properties or CT14 businesses with three-phase supplies, 22kW three-phase halves charge time on compatible vehicles.
We install Zappi, Ohme, Andersen, Hypervolt, Wallbox Pulsar and Rolec, and can advise on which suits your DNO-notified capacity, home battery/solar setup and future heat-pump load. Every install is OZEV-registered where the customer qualifies for the EV chargepoint grant (renters, flat owners, small commercial - the owner-occupier grant closed in 2022 but landlord and flat schemes continue).
The DNO notification.
Any EV charger install requires notification to your Distribution Network Operator. In Deal that's UK Power Networks Southern.
- G98 - fit-and-inform for single-phase installs up to 16A per phase. The 7.4kW / 32A single-phase charger sits under G99 not G98 unless there's a load-management scheme reducing the peak below 16A. In practice we notify most 7.4kW installs via G98 with load management and via G99 without.
- G99 - prior authorisation for larger loads. 22kW three-phase installs are always G99. The DNO may impose an export limit or require a supply upgrade if the local network is constrained.
We handle the notification. On a straightforward G98, the connection agreement is issued within a few working days. On G99, allow 4 to 12 weeks depending on network study outcome. We flag this up-front so the timeline is realistic.
Conservation area and listed-building considerations.
A wall-mounted EV charger on the front elevation of a Grade II listed Middle Street terrace is not straightforward. Dover District Council conservation officers will usually push for a rear-elevation install, a discreet colour match to the render, or a bollard-mount at the driveway edge. We survey the whole route - meter position, cable path, charger location - before quoting so the DDC consent path is clear.
