What we still see in Deal fuseboards.
Deal's older housing stock throws up the same fuseboards year after year. Wylex plug-in fuse units from the 1960s and 70s, still going in 1930s ex-council semis in Mill Hill. Wylex Standard board with rewireable fuses. Early split-load boards from the 1990s with a single 30mA RCD and a bank of MCBs. Plastic-enclosure boards from the 2000s and 2010s that met the 17th Edition when they were installed but no longer meet Amendment 2's metal-enclosure requirement introduced 2016 and reinforced in 2022.
The red flags.
- Burn marks or discolouration around a fuse or MCB. Loose termination, arcing, or overload. Immediate.
- The RCD trips randomly, often at night. Cumulative earth leakage from a marginal circuit tips the single 30mA RCD. Common on the seafront where salt-air degradation raises leakage.
- Rewireable fuse wire, not MCBs. No shock protection, no calibrated trip curve. Replace.
- Plug-in Wylex fuses. Even the cartridge versions - no RCD protection, no SPD, no metal enclosure. Replace.
- No RCD at all on socket circuits. Non-compliant even under 17th Edition. Priority replace.
- Hot to the touch. Board or supply-tail termination is loose or over-loaded. Investigate immediately.
- Buzzing or humming from the board. Contactor, loose neutral, or failing MCB. Investigate.
- Fuse wire has been "up-rated" - 15A wire in a 5A holder because it kept blowing. Circuit is now unprotected against overload. Serious risk.
What Amendment 2 requires now.
18th Edition Amendment 2:2022 tightened several things on new consumer unit installations in domestic property:
- Metal enclosure (introduced 2016, retained).
- SPD (surge protection device) - now required in most domestic installations unless a specific risk assessment justifies omission.
- AFDD (arc-fault detection device) - recommended on final circuits feeding sleeping areas and other higher-risk locations in AC-supplied dwellings above certain thresholds.
- All final circuits RCD-protected (30mA), either via dual-RCD split-load or full-RCBO board.
What a replacement looks like.
Straightforward Deal domestic swap: 6-10 way metal-enclosed board, dual-RCD or full-RCBO, SPD integrated, existing tails re-terminated to a new main switch. Meter position and DNO fuse rating checked. Main earth conductor verified to 25mm² (or upgraded). Supplementary bonding checked in bathrooms. Full initial verification. Electrical Installation Certificate issued on the day. Building Regulations compliance certificate posted within 30 days by NAPIT or NICEIC on your behalf.
Typical timeline: single day, power off between 09:00 and 16:00, temporary supply for fridge and Wi-Fi.
